Sustainable Garden

Considered our outdoor science lab, our garden mission is to educate our students on the science of food, promote sustainability through vertical tower gardening powered by solar energy, understand the importance of water conservation and educate them on the aspects of eating healthy.

Many students in the urban environment do not understand the relationship between a tomato to a can of tomato sauce. Watching food grow in the garden helps students understand where our food comes from at an organic, local level.  It shows the relationship between plants and the food we eat, while promoting sustainable living for our community.

Students also observe the metamorphosis process in our butterfly garden. They enjoy searching for the eggs, caterpillars and watching butterflies emerge from their cocoon. We even have two water sources for the pollinators to support the flowers that bloom to become fruits and vegetables and sustain our butterfly population.

Our efforts have been recognized by local newspapers, the Beach Reporter and Daily Breeze, as well as CBS Los Angeles, CA news affiliate. We received the City of Torrance Green Award for Sustainability with the focus on a pesticide free, water conservation growing environment.

We are grateful for our sponsors, Whole Foods Foundation, BeWaterWise, EnvironscapeLA, Rainbird, Orchard Supply Hardware, and Farmer Pickles, who have generously contributed to our garden through grants, donations, expertise, and hands-on construction and maintenance.

We invite volunteers and donations to help us implement phase II of our plan and ask that checks be made out to South Bay Christian School with "Garden" in the memo line.

Thank you for your support in helping our garden grow.
